Creative Storytelling for nonprofits, journalists & Scientists

Hi! I’m Mikhaila (mi-kay-la) Markham.
I believe in the transformative power of art and storytelling in concert with collective action. To this end, I work with nonprofit organizations, researchers, and journalists to create multimedia stories that are both informative and engaging.
Because I work with a diverse client base, I choose to keep my artistic style and offerings flexible. One thing that stays the same? I always incorporate lots of input and interaction from the communities and organizations I work alongside.
Featured Projects
-
The Gray Bat Project
In the summer of 2024, I developed and pitched a new comics series that brings conservation stories to life. This pilot comic puts a spotlight on gray bats – and TNC's efforts to protect them.
-
Bad Landlord
The Bad Landlord one-pager was created in collaboration with MLK50: Justice Through Journalism. It serves as a resource for renters all over the city of Memphis, TN.
-
Layout Design Templates
Strong layout designs can make complex issues more accessible to target audiences. This template was designed using consistent formatting, intuitive headings, and cohesive visual elements.
Ways to work with me
-
In the age of stock photos and one-size-fits-all graphic design, custom illustrations can help your brand stand out! Digital illustrations are great for social media campaigns, multi-page explainers, weekly newsletters, websites, and more.
-
Data is important, but it can be challenging to make complex research approachable. Through illustrated data visualizations and creative storytelling, important findings and ongoing studies can be shared with broader audiences.
-
Stories wield a particularly strong influence over our attitudes, beliefs, and behavior. As such, narrative storytelling can be one of the most powerful ways to communicate your organization’s mission and vision.
-
Reports don’t have to be boring — they can be visually stunning, accessible, and informative all at the same time! These materials can be designed for both print and digital formats, ensuring accessibility and usability across all platforms.
